California's top court legalizes gay marriage

“As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. It's inevitable. This door's wide open now. It's going to happen, whether you like it or not.”

California's Supreme Court declared that gay couples in the nation's biggest state can marry - a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, ... via Log Cabin Democrat

My ancestors had to fight for their right to vote and yet we still have equality issues? I hope the rest of the nation follows suit (as it has historically when California has stepped out in front to be progressive and accepting).

Remember when interracial marriage was against the law. As a straight american female I say lets pull ourselves out of the darkages and allow people to love whom ever they choose. What business is it of ours who we choose to love. Do you think by refussing to allow same sex marriages, it will make these people go straight? Lighten up America. What harm is really going to come of leagelizing same sex marriages? Why don't we spend more time on the issue of homelessness, poverty and healthcare rather than who marries whom. I truly beleive we spend far too much time and energy fighting the wrong causes.

I wanted to add my point of view as a parent of a 28 year old lesbian. First, what I've learned about "choice" and being a Lesbian. When I asked my daughter (when she first came out at age 16) why she chose such a lifestyle, she said why would anyone choose something so fraught with hatred, violence, isolation - her list went on. That hit me square in the heart and put things in perspective. She was correct. Sorry for the digression, but if that's one thing that needs to be put to rest is the worn out argument that being gay or lesbian is a "choice". Moving on to the issue at hand. The collective whoop of parents could be heard throughout the State of California when this ruling was overturned. What's indescribable, if you haven't lived it, is how your heart breaks knowing your child cannot participate in a sacred institution, make a legal commitment to the love of his or her life, have all the legal benefits of married life, share in medical decisions - just as straight couples now do. But what is even more heartbreaking is that our lesbian and gay children have been 1) treated as immoral, second class citizens not worthy of the legal institution of marriage; and that 2) they are freaks who deserve a different set of rules. It's time for us all to move on, accept this new legislation, stop feeling like gay marriage negatively impacts us straight folks, or somehow threatens the sanctity of straight marriage. The blessing in this ruling is that our children can (hopefully) finally come "out of the closet" and start moving toward living a full life, in committed relationships, without fear or shame. I urge all that fear this ruling to take a few steps back and walk a mile in different shoes.

Here is what needs to happen to all homophobic and heterosexually prejudice Californians.

They should except the reality of the Supreme Court ruling then go outside, put their thumb to the forehead, stick their fingers in the air and say:

LOOOOSSSSERRRR

sorry.....I had to lighten this up a little....

People are dying in a war on the other side of the world.

Bin Laden is still free.

Gas prices keep going up.

Homes are being destroyed in natural disasters.

Children are being abused by their families.

The local pedophile may be a local school teacher, or better yet, a priest.

Poverty still exists here even though we are one of the richest nations in the world.

There is still no cure for cancer.

Oh, and aren't we running out of rice?

All this and you are still going to focus on my sexuality?

Honestly. Perhaps we need more hobbies.

Why do you think the majority agrees with you . I believe 67% of the voters said Marriage is between a man and a Woman . My ancestors were fighting for what was good and right for all people, Perversion, wasn't one of them !!

it doesn't matter who marries who, but what matters is California spoke and voted for what they wanted and the supreme court came in and overturned it like our votes don't matter. What the hell do we need to vote for. Majority rules and if you don't like the way people vote in your state, hell move!
