Torrance jobs worth the wait
It was, noted Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, "a sign of the times." A big sign. The first applicants for about a dozen city of Torrance maintenance worker positions - a job that pays $14.87 to start, plus ...

I haven't noticed the rents coming down in Torrance, nonetheless. A family has to shell out close to $3000 a month to live in a simple single family residence and for what? The schools? Having the rentals vacant for a few months while residents move away in droves will be a wake up call to the greedy landlords. We are in a recession (whether or not the government wants to admit it) but might be entering a Depression. We are planning to move away soon, and will be loading up on necessities (just in case we do see a Depression). God help those of you that will be left here to tough it out.

I know what you mean! We pay $2000 a month in San Pedro, and believe me it isn't for the schools! We have the deadly cliffs and ocean to thank for the ridiculous price! Haha. I do see a light at the end of the tunnel though...Oh wait it is just that darn metro! lol...Good luck to you, hope your move is paradise :) |

We're in the process of paying off all our debts by the end of Dec. Then in 09 we'll save enough to cover at least 3 months of expenses. So by summer 09 we'll be in a safer position than most.

wow. I'm so sorry for what everyone is going through. Reading this makes me realize how thankful I should be for my job...and I need to never complain when I'm working!! Reading this article is a wake up call for how bad it really is.

It's disheartening to see the sadness and desperation everywhere you go. I, myself, am a single; my 4 yr old son and I live in a tiny one-bedroom apt. at $895. We barely make ends meet and even go without eating sometimes. I went to CalWorks for help with rent, food, anything and was told I make too much money!! It makes me feel hopeless sometimes. I work full time and make peanuts for as hard as I work. I have a BA and want to work towards my masters. I'm thinking for what? Just to have more students loans to pay back that I can't afford?? I think I'm a decent, hard working, honest person and some times I wonder if this is as good as it's gonna get.

meant to say single mom. Sorry for the typo.

Long Beach is a short distance to the EAST of Torrance. Long Beach is a beautiful city and the rents are still very affordable. Their schools are good too! Best wishes. |

These are decent paying blue collar type jobs with great benefits, at least the applicants are demonstrating the drive and initiative to get a shot at it. NOW, look over at GM/Ford/Chrsyler....bunch of stink'n UAW union workers getting paid 3-4 TIMES that amount to do equivalent type of work or even less.....and they want a handout of $25 BILLION DOLLARS. Let them go bankrupt...and re-organize them without all those UAW contracts.

That is terrible! I wish I was in a position to help you, at least buy you a weeks worth of groceries! It breaks my heart when I hear about situations like that, and i can tell you, I am not that far from being in your situation also :( I used to be able to run out grab a job no matter where I went, now it seems like it is getting more and more impossible! At 40...good luck! I have 4 kids and my husband has a great job, still barely enough to get by though. I know what you mean when you say you "make too much" that happened to me when I applied for free lunches at my kids schools! I have a daughter about to graduate college and am only hoping better for her and we are paying for it, so there will not have to be loans...at least right now anyway, who knows what the future holds :( I wish you the best sweetie, hang on, the storm has to get better sometime! In the meantime, try going to a local church and take advantage of their food banks, some even give away clothing and school supplies. Also the goodwill in our area has a day (i believe fridays maybe?) that have $1 clothing! I know it sucks but it is better than being homeless...and NAKED! haha..ok I just wanted to make you smile :) |

Good luck to all of those applying. I hope things get better soon.

Whats your degree in? Liberal arts. If you are going to spend money on college, you better pick a degree you can make a living at.

To those of you writing about your high rents, I am a landlord. The rents we charge our tenants are in the $2,000 range here in Torrance, and what we charge doesn't cover the mortgage payment. We have to pay out of pocket every month to meet the mortgage. Go easy on us - we're trying to be fair!
I visited the Civic Center Library next door to the Personnel Building where these folks were lined up for the maintenance worker jobs. I give them ALL the credit in the world for making the commitment to find a job; that being said, the condition of the areas in front of the Library and Personnel Buildings were deplorable after they all left - trash everywhere. There were waste receptacles available - would you want such disrespectful people working for you? |

This should be a sign that its time to close the borders immediately.
|
|
|
Both of our political parties support open borders and guest worker programs even though unemployment is climbing daily and Americans are out of work. I would think most of the folks lined up that won't get the City job would do all those constructions jobs out there currently filled by illegals.

These are scary times................. Good luck and God bless to all, including me.

This has always been the problem every time Torrance opens up this kind of post. The applicants leave a mess. Before they used to pee in the bushes and now they even have a porta potty but they still leave a mess. But I think it is the city's fault for making them line up to turn in their app. Why can't they just apply online on a first come first serve basis? I think HR just wants to give the custodians some work to do since they don't do much and many sleep on the job. Ha ha. |
|
|
At least these proud Americans are eager to work for their dough and not expecting a hand-out like GM, Ford and Chrysler......
Anyone flew in in a private jet or chauffeured in to wait in line? Anyone had a golden parachute deal coming from their old job? Stick it to Detroit CEOs and most CEOs! |

OK, Jay Furtado is "suffering from nerve damage that makes playing a guitar for a sustained length of time increasingly difficult". Well, Jay, kiss getting a job for the City of Torrance as a maintenance worker good bye!! Nerve damage and you want to do maintenance? Not a good thing to disclose to a newspaper reporter. People in City Hall do read the DB. Good luck with that!

Hey, that is obviously not a good situation to be in. And you are obviously trying since you are working and went to school. I am working in OC, I can at least buy you a week or two of groceries if you are in the OC or LA area. My email address is cfa79_2004@yahoo.com - please let me know if I can help in this small way. thank you. |

the only way to bring the rents down is to vote with your feet...move to another city. landlord are not going to decide to lower rents unless they are losing more money because the place is vacant.
