per the article: "she came in second at a recent talent show at her school to a troupe of break-dancing Japanese-American kids".
So why are we having such a large article about the "loser" of the competition - why does the Breeze not do an article about the "Winners".

All I can say is that we have probably not heard the last of this young lady and her music. Soothing, deep lyrics and with such emotion, you can hear it in her songs. True gift indeed....

not sure why certain people want their little kids to look, sing, and act older than they are, but - whatever. Who wants to hear a 13 year old who's never had a boyfriend and isn't yet "interested" in boys sing a million songs about picking yourself up after heartbreak then?? I can assure you - there's nothing a 13 year old can sing about imagined heartbreak that I want to listen to.
And, excuse me - last I heard, music was about emotion and feeling. If she doesn't even know what the songs mean or where they come from - what the heck am I listening for?? You connect to songs because the writer sings from a place that they KNOW the lyrics because they've lived them. Somebody's lying - there's no way a child is singing all these deep songs having had no experience with deep things whatsoever - and if so, then it's kinda fraudulent.
But I still say - I'm not interested in a kid singing about adult woes. If that's your thing - more power to you. May she have loads of success and still be able to keep her head on straight. Seems like the industry is really grasping at straws these days. Her voice is interesting, but it definitely needs a lot of work and a lot of training. Potential?? YES. But, Star potential?? No - I'm not seeing that at the moment.

Patricia Vasquez wrote: Nick - Why post that Jessica came in second "to a troupe of break-dancing Japanese-American kids." What if they'd been an African American troupe? Why not just "a troupe of break-dancing kids"? Sorry - the reference just makes me wince. pv HERE! HERE! I agree with you! That was a devisive comment made to point out TWO negatives in the writer's mind - 1) that the kids were JAPANESE and 2) that they were BREAK DANCING. Well, sorry if neither of those don't fit into your idea of America. But get over yourself - Japanese Americans and break dancing are just as natural, normal, and acceptable as baseball and apple pie in this country. I hate when people insinuate. If you're gonna be man enough to insult someone - at least do it out loud - not slipping through the back door. Whether you meant it to or not, your comment gave the impression that you were shocked at the outcome of the talent show - like "Unbelievable! What is this country coming to??- composer/lyricist/singing and keyboard playing white American, Jessica, LOST to a troupe of break dancing Japanese-Americans??! OMG.*quick* gets me muh smelling salts!" Here's a clue - They are AMERICANS - JUST LIKE Jessica. And MAYBE they won because their break dancing was actually BETTER than her singing.*GASP* With all her melancholy/mature songs, it's actually not much of a stretch to believe that 10, 11, 12, and 13 years olds would choose something that makes them wanna dance, feel happy, upbeat, and alive vs. something that'll make them cry their eyes out, light candles, and possibly slit their wrists over broken hearts caused by imaginary boyfriends and girlfriends. In any case - you could have just left it at "she came in second at her school talent show." And your article would have been no better and no worse. Reference to race is sometimes appropriate for an article - but this was not that article. And, hey - here's a thought: instead of allowing or forcing our little KIDS to grow up faster than they should, maybe the ADULTS need to grow up and exercise our responsibility to leave this world better than we found it. Let's spread something BESIDES prejudice. How do you think THOSE children feel reading this mediocre article? I understand WHY he did it - if he'd just said "break dancing kids" people would automatically assume they're black. That's why I said it should've just been she came in second at her school talent show. Otherwise, if he's gonna point out race - he has to point out everyone's race. And it has nothing to do with political correctness, but it has everything to do with hidden beliefs and assumptions. You'd think a writer of a paper with a huge readership would know something like that.

Hmmmmmm...
I actually saw Jessica perform in Los Angeles so before you talk about lack of emotion or not knowing what she is singing about, I would suggest that you try to see her perform sometime before jumping to conclusions about emotion. I am 63 years of age and have seen many performers in my time, and trust me on this account, Jessica is the real deal! She delivers her songs with an emotion that I have never witnessed, her eyes, voice and emotion connect with the audience. In fact I remember looking around the audience when she was singing a song called 'Fire'(on her youtube) and I saw men with tears in their eyes.
See her live and then make your decision.....but not before.
IMHO Andy

See her live and then make your decision.....but not before. IMHO Andy Thanks for your reply, but I didn't say Jessica doesn't know what she's singing about - SHE did. Here's the DIRECT quote from the THIS VERY article that we're commenting on (emphasis mine): ""the seventh-grader just turned 13." "She still likes stuffed animals - NO BOYS YET - and that's good," said her mother, Kelley, with almost palpable relief. Yet when it comes to her music, Jessica displays a maturity that belies her age...MANY of her songs were written at age 11 and 12. "Hey, IF YOU WANT ME TO STAY, you better know MY FRAGILE HEART will not be BURNED IN A FIRE like coal, so don't think that you'll bring me down. For if I ever hit the ground I will just pick myself up again," go the lyrics to her song "HAUNTING ME."" Who/what is she singing to or about if she's not even interested in boys yet?? Who/what is haunting this baby?? ""SHE'S actually WRITING FROM A PLACE THAT'S a lot DEEPER THAN a place PEOPLE HER AGE OR a couple of years OLDER WOULD actually WRITE FROM," he added." I assume she was asked here where she gets her inspiration from and this was HER reply: "THE WORDS JUST COME TO ME SOMETIMES," [JESSICA] SAID. "I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY MEAN." AND - "Just where her musical ability comes from is something of a mystery as well." That's all I'm saying. I mean, do you buy into TWEEN EXISTENTIALISM AND ANGST?? Okay, I LOL'd as I wrote that. But, srsly, are you saying that at 63, this baby's "hard hitting, emotional, makes grown men cry" lyrics reflect your life right now?? If she sings church songs, maybe I could see that happening because church songs deal with the spirit and God can use anyone to touch our spirit. But if she's just singin regular old songs - I'm not buying it. No offense to Jessica, personally.

Well, I would tend to agree with Mr. Andy. She is on youtube, go listen and hear some of her music. I just watched her song 'Fire' and if this is not a spiritual song then I don't know what is. I think Andy mentioned this song. It looks like she sang this one about a year ago and from what I heard, it sounded pretty good.
Regardless of how old Jessica is, I believe she is an indigo child and is channeling from somewhere. I guess it does not hurt that she began her musical journey at a very young age.
All in all, it is still great music.

We got to see this kid at the Live at the Lounge 2 nights ago. All I have to say is wow. What a talent. We also got to meet her and her family and I must say they are all down to earth people and so proud of Jessica. Jessica has accomplished so much at the age of 13 and yet she remains like a child of 13 off stage. I see nothing but great things happening for her. The audience loved her. Don't let anyone bring you down Jess. God gave you a gift. Go with it. You have another fan.

I was also glad I got to see her live. I just showed up and was told that the event was sold out. They put me on a waiting list and I was lucky to get in. To tell you the truth all of the performers and the comedian were really good and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. But to see Jessica sing, was just mind blowing. And not only her singing, but the way she conversed with the audience and her spontaneity was equally impressive.
I agree with you Terry, not just good things happening for her but GREAT things.....
