That is terrible. I hope nobody killed them.

Were they legal?

You never go out on the ocean, do you. No clue. |
I have heard of lions, but sea lions?
Are these like mermaids? c'mon. |
"Sea lions are any of seven species in six genera of modern pinnipeds including one extinct one (the Japanese sea lion). Sea lions are characterized by the presence of external ear pinnae or flaps, long front flippers, and the ability to walk on four flippers on land. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the northern and southern hemispheres with the notable exception of the Atlantic Ocean. They are generally found in shallow waters of coastal areas of both with abundant food resources." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_lion |

I forgot to add the what does that have to do with anything comment. lol @ ME!
I don't go on the Ocean much, but i do board down in Seal Beach, unlike Polluted wave less strong beach. Maria, Do you even live near the beach? Did you see the 2 whales that washed up last summer? They were blue whales, and no they were not depressed, they were just blue. I'm going to have fun with you. You should of said nothing. lol |

animals dies all the time. the break water keeps most out to sea where they feed the other critters of the ocean. a group of the seals might have all eaten some bad fish and died. might not have been from polution-but i doubt it.

dies? die

Our beaches are disgusting, period.
There is no hope either, the ports and other big businesses have all the politicians in their pockets. |
Well since you started the corrections, I feel the need to correct you. You should have wrote, "You don't seem too bright..." not "You don't seem to bright..." Ya, ya, I know, public schools, blah, blah, blah. |
Um, if you're going to correct someone's spelling, it would behoove you to use correct grammar while chastising them, no? Instead of writing: "You should have wrote", it should be: "You should have written..." Sorry. I just couldn't resist. |
What do you mean by this? Are you implying that since the ocean is dirty, it's obvious they weren't killed by a person--it was pollution? If that is what you are saying, then it is you who has no clue. It is very possible people could have killed them. Fishermen are notorious for shooting sea lions who try to "steal their fish". If you don't believe me, then just go to the San Pedro or Laguna Beach Marine Mammal Center and ask the dedicated volunteers how many sea lions they have had to care for with bullet wounds. |

You don't have any room to write. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Now put that stone down.

What probably killed these sealions is a natural algae and not man made pollution.
You bring a very good point about the beaches being disgusting. Long Beach has beach clean up days (usually on Saturdays) where volunteers pick up trash left on the beach. In thirty minutes you would be surprised how much trash can be picked up by a group of volunteers. As for the Port of Long Beach and Los Angeles if you are over the age of 17, can pass a security clearance, and are in decent condition why not consider joining the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The USCGAUX is a volunteer organization that assists in the education of recreational boaters and assist the Coast Guard in partolling the ports and facilities for safety, security and environmental hazards. Our district assists in trash pick up days on the water but the most important way to combat this is educating the recreational boat about litter. Sealions are a protected and a plastic bag or plastic six pack holder can cause more harm to one of these creatures than you can believe. Training and the education is free and you can volunteer as much time as you wish to. You do not have to own a boat to join but if you love the water it is a great group to be part of. Our flotilla meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month in the community room of the Belmont Shore Fire and Police Station. For more information check out our website: http://a1140303.uscgaux.info/

do something, ANYTHING, with the breakwater!
it is doing very little to nothing to protect the residents on the peninsula from 58th st to the jetty and everything to hold in pollutants and murky water. the very things that kill seals and fish. i was walking along the beach side of the peninsula on saturday. the 62nd st lifeguard shack is almost next to the boardwalk. so much for spending thousands every year to import sand and keep the waves out. |
sad the city can't even pay minimum wage for people providing basic services. |
I always wondered why the city does not just take some of the breakwater down to improve the water circulation. removing the whole thing may clean up the water but probably will erode ocean blvd and many homes along the coast. ever wonder why bluff park has such a steep drop off? erosion. but I think strategic removeal of some of the breakwater would be good. complete removal-no

The sea lions that were killed are California Sea Lions and it's a naturally occuring toxin. It has NOTHING to do with pollution, global warming, etc. The fish eats the plant with this neurotoxin in it. They aren't affected by it at all. A marine mammal such as a whale, Harbor Seal, Northern Elephant Seal, CA Sea Lion, etc. eats the fish and gets sick. Fort Macarthur Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro and Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach care for them in our area. They give them antiseizure medication plus other medications as well depending on per case basis and iv fluids under the skin to flush out the toxins. You can visit either place for free. Go there, ask questions and educate yourself before blaming someone for killing these mammals. It's called nature taking care of nature!
