Air pollution, asthma link studied

It is wonderful to see the Air Port at last being mentioned as well as the Sea Port as a source of pollution ... for a long time LAX has been the "invisible elephant" in the room compared to the Sea Port re: newspapers reporting on negative impacts on neighboring communities.

I lived in Hawthorne for 40 years and had to move out of state. The air is really bad from the planes and all of the trucks going to the port. The smell of diesel got to be over whelming. The doctors kept telling me that I had to move out of state or die soon. I lived in the emergency rooms. I couldn't go out for walks, or open my windows. It was very bad. I xouldn't drive down the streets with my windows down. I now live the State of Washington. And my asthma is 98% better. I can have my windows open and go for walks. Plus all of the fires in California did not help things air wise eighter. I am so glad I made the move. I feel so much better. The air is much cleaner here.

Duh.
This was news in the 1960's. I was horrified when a couple years before I got my driver's license, presidential hopefulls were predicting we would all be driving gasoline free vehicles by 2000! The ten year federal plan's (subsequently successfully modelled by France, Brazil et al) first official federal "deadline" extension was so broad, that it hasn't even needed any extensions since then. And they are hushed-up. But, of course, back in the 60's, 70's and even some of the 80's automobile manufacturer's weren't doing so badly. If they decided to completely ignore guidelines through all these years of government required research and development,(and I think I'll google and see if I can just see how much they DO/DID spend on R&D when done here), and they were very busy those years splitting up their corporations so they could prove they had no money (because as everyone knows, with automobiles, the "real expense" and profit is in service and parts) to comply with the law. The attorney fees alone could have funded a couple of projects, not to mention the even greater amount of lobbyist money that convinced elected officials the auto manufacturers needed "more time". What should be news is how California is actually the 2nd cleanest state in the continental states now. And that is because we are the leader in state environmental legislation, not relying on federal funds/oversight (EPA) for local enforcement. |
