Sorry, but paying middle school students, or ANY students, for doing what they are supposed to be doing to begin with is just WRONG. The schools are falling apart and they want to do this? Ridiculous.

What in the world is the DC Government doing with there money. Again, misused money. First paying them to go to summer school, now paying the to attend school and be good. I think they should fine the parents for not making there kids go to school. Then put them out for bad behavior. This is CRAZY!!!

This will not work and is a complete waste of money and time. Click on link to read story about the failure of the "cash to kids" plan in NYC. Just more taxpayer money going down the toilet.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? What kind of lesson is this teaching the "good kids" that WANT to do well in school? This is just going to make the good students say "wow, if I start letting my grades fall and stop behaving, they'll start PAYING me to be good." I know some parents that pay their kids for getting good grades. When one of my sons asked me if I would do that, I told him that his payment will be a good education and a good career where the'll earn better money than I'd ever be able to pay them.

Totally agree! Never reward bad behavior...instead, they need to understand that education IS a reward.

And a $100 every two weeks? That will give them plenty of drug money. Since DC seems to have an abundance of money to throw around, why don't they double the teacher's salaries and then maybe they'll get a higher caliber of teachers and the kids will get a better education. Or, instead of PAYING the kids, they should put the problem kids in juvie and arrest the parents for the sins of their children, because it all comes back to the parents ineffectively parenting these kids because their kids are just welfare checks to them.

WOW. Way to perpetuate that ghetto attitude of entitlement DC! Turning out some outstanding citizens there, boy.

Hey, I didn't shoplift today so where's my bonus? I gave my son breakfast this morning and damnit, I want to get a reward for that! If I don't speed on the way home today I want a check.

Pathetic.

I can't wait to move out of this area. To bad you can't move back in time to before this country turned upside down and insane.

I would like to get paid for driving the speed limit and sober. I'd like to get paid for holding the elevator for someone. I'd like to get paid for saying "thank you." I'd like to get paid for wearing pants in public. Actually, no I wouldn't - because these are things you're just supposed to do in a civilized society.
Paying people to do what they're supposed to do anyway is a bad idea. Your motivation to go to school should be your own instinct for self preservation.
I have a hard time believing this is MIchelle Rhee's idea. She should cut this plan off. There are much better ways the schools need to spend money. How about buying some books?!

This will solve nothing but cost taxpayers a lot more money. What lesson does this teach? That if you obey the law, you get paid. Adults out in the Real World don't get paid to obey the law. If we obey the law, we stay out of jail. That in itself is a reward.

Another ridiculous program by this moronic DC Council.

Another DC entitlement program that will end with corruption some how and in some preverse way. Watch and see. There is no oversight in Washington DC government and just look at the DC Summer Job Program Mayor Fenty has admitted that 59 million dollars has been misplaced, lost, and stolen and yet is asking for 20.1 million more for less than 18,000 participants for a summer job program. Students do need encouragment to do well not just to attend school. Reward those students for doing well not just for showing up to school. Sad really sad.

This is what I think. I think that the kids dont go to school because the schools are falling apart. If they take this money and rebuild the schools, make them more modern, and give the staff, key staff raises this will make a difference.

I am a product of DCPS, and the same schools that I want to, my parents both went to. According to them (my parents) soem of the schools that I went to had to same problems when they went there. This is terrible.

Mayor Fenty, step down, you are not the man for the job, you fucking looser. Did you not learn anything working at Steptoe and Johnson? Would you want your kids to go to a school as old as a DCPS. All of the sruuounding areas have much better buildings that they have recently built, why is it that DC can not build new schools?

This is the Nations Capitol that we are talking about. We should have the best School System, the best Police Force, the best of everything should be here.

THink about this Mr. Mayor. Get it together before you endup having people hating you like the hate the failure Persident Bush

The Democratic run Congress is "hated" more. Mayor Fenty is addressing the failing Dc public schools but at the same time wasting monies on DC Summer Job Program where he is asking for 20.1 million more dollars for a summer program that has already lost, misplaced, and stolen 59 million dollars.

79.1 million dollars could have been better spent building newer and better infastructure for Washignton DC's students. No more monies spent on DC Summer job program and an oversight commitee shgould be assigned as Councilman Marion Barry has demanded. Spend that 20.1 million on our DC students for the new school 2008 session since obviously monies are available to be spent!

This is another crock of shame that makes DC a pathetic excuse for a city. This is right up there with paying $50,000,000 to all those kids for summer "jobs". Can anyone tell me what work these kids actually did? Any info on oversight and admission into the program?

Can anyone tell me why these kids can't get jobs and do well in school without being bribed and supported by the government? Way to train another generation of entitlement attitude idiots that will be on the government dime for life.

Well at least they'll be qualified for government jobs.
