Granholm Opposes Gas Sales Tax Suspension

Even if the legislature gathers support to temporarily suspend the state's sales tax on gasoline, the plan won't be signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm.

I agree with Governor Granholm to an extent. The ultimate solution should stop at the start; however, without an immediate relief effort in place, many people will be forced to decide between eating, or getting to work. They unfortuantely go hand in hand.

I am one of those that commute to work in public service everyday over 110 miles round trip per day. I do not support a repeal of the gas tax. We already are losing jobs and cutting the hand that supports road construction and improvment is not the way to go. For the $30.00 I would save during the summer, I can forgo a meal or movie to get the same for my buck

I would have to agree. The reduction is a temporary fix that will only wind up having to be repaid at a later date anyway.

The last time it was raised it was for road work and totally necessary by the same people who now want to temporarily repeal it.

How will they pay for the road work later if they do not collect these taxes now?

I'm glad to see that Granholm is being realistic about this issue. This idea is irresponsible. A partisan move to make her look bad no matter what she does. If she signs it, it will suddenly be her fault for being wrong, backing a bad idea. If she doesn't, then she will be accused of not caring about the citizens.

In my opinion, they need to stop with foolish, feel-good ideas and straighten out the MBT that they botched so badly.

Doesn't Governor Granholm realize the increased dollars in tourism revenue that would be created if people could afford to travel..... or is it because the idea was suggested by a Republican? Look at her record and you'll see that she is the worst thing that has ever happened to Michigan!

The proposed tax holiday is the sales tax paid on gasoline sales, not the road tax.

stupid B****. of course she would, we pay her gas. she wont do anything to help us out. she approves raising taxes on an economy that is in a recession, and anything to do with putting more money in our pockets to help with the pain and sting she denies.
I think they should get a huge pay cut and learn to live on a 9 or 10.00 an hour job and see how they could survive.

I totally agree $300 million out of the state revenue, but thats $300 million that will go back in to the economy somewhere else. She has no clue. It's just $300 million that won't go directly to the gov't so she would have no control over it. We are not just gonna save $300 million and not spend it. She makes me sick. REMOVE THE MOLE!

Michigan is one of the worst states in the country, put Clinton in office and the rest of the states can look at us and see where this country will be in 4 years, she'll make the same dam mistakes.

If you think about it, it is not going to save people that much money. If gas is $4.00 a gallon:
The tax would be $.24 per gallon. If you get 16 gallons of gas a week or so that is a savings of $3.84. They would only be running this from May 26th to September 1st which is 14 weeks.
Estimated savings $53.76. Last I checked that got me what, one to two bags of groceries if I am lucky.
Fix the problem don't put a band aid on it.

If it's not that much money why don't we put an extra 6% on what is already there. No big deal only another 50 some dollars.

You are missing the point.$50 dollars over a 14 week period is not going to help people. This is one of the sad attempts to try and make people feel like they are trying to help.

Regardless of your feelings for the Gov, she is right. Most of you keep looking for a surface solution but it all goes very much deeper than that. There are no easy cures, especially when those that complain the most are the ones that oppose the necessary measures we need to take toward the proper direction.

The price of gas seems to be about the same all over the US. Removing the tax on gas will be offset by a price increase by the oil companys keeping the price about the same.

So after reading all of these, I see where some may say its only $50 in 14 weeks and the tax suspention a "band-aid" won't fix the problem, but I also agree with O-Boi. If she had a job that was $10 or less an hour she would be wanting that extra $50 dollars, expecially if she didn't live in the city and were one of those commuters who go an hour to get to Grand Rapids for a decent good paying job to feed their families. Just think, if no "temporary solution" was spoken, Michigan residents would complain that Congress doesn't care. At least someone spoke up just to let us know they care.

Yup, they let us know.

I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember Governor Granholm talking about reducing state sales tax on gasoline two years ago. If that’s right, I wonder why she’s changed her mind. Maybe because she is not initiating it?
