Mugabe was born in Mashonaland Zimbabwe about 1922, brought up in a Catholic Mission, was a teacher in Ghana when he came back to Rhodesia and was persuaded to make a speech. He became popular as a result and got involved in politics. He was locked up for 10years by Ian Smith, who let him out in an amnesty. He ran off and joined the armed struggle in neigbouring Mozambique. He ruthlessly got to the top of the Zanu tree by a mixture of guile and murder. He famously had a guerrilla general Tongogora, who was more popular than himself, murdered around the time of independence. Power was pretty much handed to him on a plate in 1981, he had reconciliation with the whites, but murdered 20,000 Matabele in order to obtain total power by the mid 1980s. He has since constantly changed the constitution to entrench himself further in power, and has met all attempts at resistance with torture/beatings and murder while slowly draining the economy dry.

I am realy scared, i am going to zambia for holiday and there is a concern how the zimbabwian despot can affect the boarder, i am not english, my husband is, but my country also did not accept the new goverment, i do not want to be on my honneymoon burned with my love

I am really not sure what is a reason for UN and the other political suppoters in the world. If the UN and AU can not make any proper interventions to sort out this crisis in Zimbabwe, then i suggest that these commitees they should be distroyed.

For goodness sake, Zambia is not Zimbabwe! Just go ahead and take your honneymoon vacation. Zambia has had problem neighbors before and they are perfectly able to take care of themselves and their guests/visitors. "Security" is not unique to Europe or whatever the conner of the world you call home. Any fair minded person will agree with me that so far the Zambian people/government have done a hell of a job in terms of security, considering the history of the political/armed struggles of that area--I mean, Ian Smith's Rhodesian wars, Angolan wars, Mozambique, Namibia and Zaire (DR Congo) to the North. And, not forgetting, during the Aparthied struggles in South Africa. So, Zambia has been a frontline state for a long time and they know how to deal with mad men like Ian Smith, Botha, Mugabe, and the like. Do not fall into this rediculous way of thinking which, unfortunately, a number of Westerners seem to indulge in: "Africa is one big country." Nonses!!

I have been to Zambia and it is OK, just take extra money for bribes. It is custom to pay a bribe when stopped by the police, even if they find nothing wrong.

Reliable sources tell me that Mugabe is actually of Malawian origin. His family name is beleived to be "Matibili", though this was in some way changed to his current name "Mugabe". It was common back in the day for Malawians and Mozambiqueans to migrate to Zimbabwe and change their names, normally to something similar to the original names eg replacing "L" with an "R" simplying because the Shona (?majority) dialect excludes L and more importantly to avoid tribal backlash. Mugabe was educated at Kutama Mission in Moshonaland West where he was admired by main for his intelectaul abilities. He left the mission school with a teaching qualification and was later fast become a key player in political affairs..
