5 colleges for Palin

He may have gone to Harvard, but he obviously didn't learn much. "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream." "I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family." "I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a draft." "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." "You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that." "Too many good docs are getting out of the business. Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." "They misunderestimated me." — "Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?" 2) "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." 1) "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."  (Friday | post #91)

5 colleges for Palin

I read profiles and interview doctors for medical fellowships as part of my job. If anyone applies for fellowship with as sketchy a college career as Palin's, they wouldn't get past the front door. A consistent college career is as important as a professional one.  (Friday | post #86)

FEMA to pay for some 'extended' hotel stays

Does it bother you at all that billions of American taxpayer dollars are being used to rebuild Iraq? Shouldn't American taxpayer dollars take care of Americans first? Many of those people who got FEMA money are American taxpayers. Don't they deserve something for their contribution, or is it reserved for foreign countries?  (Friday | post #18)

Hoosiers react to Palin's speech

My God, do you people read?!?!? <<<The US budget for Iraq in FY 2007 came to $4,988/Iraqi. This is triple Iraq's per-person GDP. It's like spending $121,000 per person ($484,000 per family of 4) in the US. >>> And here's hoping that when you're 90, you've outlived your family and when you look for help someone says to you "screw you, old man..we're too busy looking out for number one." What a group of hateful, selfish people we've become. I hope most live long enough to regret it.  (Friday | post #44)

FEMA to pay for some 'extended' hotel stays

FEMA is here in Iowa to be sure that eligible Iowans receive help with their home repair expenses, rent payments and some of the other unexpected financial burdens brought into their lives by the severe weather that has been ongoing here since May 25,” said FEMA’s Federal Coordinating Officer Bill Vogel. “FEMA wants you to know about the types of grants available to help you cope with disaster-related losses.” As of July 1, FEMA has approved more than $73 million in grants to help more than 13,000 Iowa households with uninsured housing costs. These grants are available for: • Eligible homeowners or renters whose house or apartment is made uninhabitable by the disaster to cover rent for temporary replacement housing, most often a rental apartment or house. • Eligible homeowners to cover costs for repairing uninsured damage to their primary residence with the goal of making the damaged home livable. http://uiflood2.bl ogspot.com/2008/07 /information-to-he lp-better-understa nd.html  (Friday | post #12)

Only Open Letters to Cindy Anthony

The thing that creeps me out about this entire thing is the reactions of those who aren't even involved in the situation. Camping out on the Anthony's front lawn??? Waving signs??? Open letters??? We all know the mother probably killed the child, and the police know that, as well. It's THEIR job to collect the evidence and make the case. You people in Orlando look like nutjobs to the rest of the country. Children are killed everyday. That doesn't make it right, but the police handle it. Vigilante justice, no matter how subtle, is sick and creepy. I was living in Orlando when Ursula Assaid was murdered by her mother's boyfriend, wrapped in a rug and thrown in a lake. I was there when Bradley McGee was bashed up and down in a toilet until he died by his mother's husband. People were outraged and upset, but they didn't take to the streets. The police did their job and justice was served. Please people, calm down, go home, and get a grip. The case is sad, yes, but taking it so personally is doing nothing but causing yourself undue emotional stress and causing you to look ridiculous.  (Friday | post #6)

U.S. unemployment rate hits 6.1%

There's a mode of thinking in this country that if all is well then all is well. Let me explain. My father never finished high school in the 1930's, instead he joined the Navy at 17 to help support his family. 8 years later he married my mother, had me, and I never remember a day when he didn't have a job that he had to get up by 4am to go to work. His days were long and physical, but he kept a roof over our heads. Our house was small, our car used, but "bigger, better" wasn't a mindset in those days. You were glad for what you had. I didn't go to college. When I was in high school the only people who went to college were those who were going to be doctors and lawyers. The rest of us went to work and we usually were able to find a fairly decent paying job. I married a man without a college degree. He worked himself up where he worked from truck driver to computer programmer. People could do that back then. Years later he was hired by a Fortune 500 company. I thought we were doing great when he was earning 80k a year, but then we divorced in 2000. I'd been a SAHM for 13 years, but I got a job making $8.00 an hour. I've doubled that in 8 years, but it's still a struggle to maintain a home, family, etc. My ex was laid off from his Fortune 500 company in 2001 and has never gotten a similarly paying job. So much for the big dream. I'm telling you all this because not everyone who is having a hard time is a welfare recipient or done wrong. Many people are hard-working, always have been. Like you, I once thought anyone who complained about finances had obviously screwed up. When you have security it's very easy to think it's because you've made all the right choices. And certainly that's a part of it, but there's also a little luck and chance and destiny in there, as well. Even though I'm not destitute I would love to have a little help with things like healthcare expenses and gasoline and daily expenses. I've love to be able to save more. I'd love to be able to take a trip to the beach. I'm not living outside my means by any stretch of the imagination; but extras just aren't there because it takes most of my paycheck to live the modest life I do. Everyone has a story and it's not always one of unplanned pregnancies and overspending and poor choices. Sometimes it's just life. Those of us who are the working lower middle class really need a break before we end up the next poverty rung on the ladder. I'm 50 years old. I worry about where I'll be in 15 or 20 years (yes, money comes out of my paycheck for retirement), but will it be enough? I'm not as concerned about welfare recipients as I am about what life is going to be like for me and millions of Americans who have lost jobs, face illness, and are financially distressed due to unemployment or underemployment. Everyone should think about these things because one difficult life event can knock you off that pillar of security you've built. There's nothing secure about the American way of life anymore. Just because you think all is well for you, it may not be well overall. As many have learned, that can all change in an instant.  (Friday | post #27)

Hoosiers react to Palin's speech

Good, you can keep paying for the welfare of Iraqi's too, because McCain's going to keep the war going. They have more money than we do right now. How's THAT make you feel? While you're struggling to make ends meet, they're shopping their asses off. But then it's so much better to support foreigners than the people in your own country, no matter what. God forbid that 90 year old woman who died from the summer heat because she can't pay the electric bill would get anything from her own country.  (Friday | post #34)

Hoosiers react to Palin's speech

Both McCain's and Palin's speeches were basically glorifications of McCain. Neither of them really touched on any issues. The Pope praising God couldn't have done a better job than that slavering Palin did while she was exhalting McCain. It was like she could have eaten him raw without sugar. And when he first came on stage last night and the camera panned to his face, I could almost read his mind. "I AM GOD. You Will Praise Me." McCain has to regurgitate his military career over and over because it's really all he has going for him. And anyone who has done their research knows his military career was quite sketchy. He cost the American taxpayers FIVE military aircraft because he was a lousy pilot. That's how ended up in a POW camp to begin with. He had difficulty keeping planes in the air. He gathered more demerits during his stint at the Naval Academy than anyone in his class, and would have been kicked out if not for his family. The Navy passed over better and more qualified men in order to promote McCain because of his family. McCain's never actually done anything on his own. He used his current wife's money and status to build his political career. He's not a man who knows anything about the common, working class American. When asked he didn't know what the price of gasoline was. He's far removed from the average American. There's nothing "self-made " about him. He was handed everything he got or he used people to get where he wanted to be. Go ahead. Slap on the nuts and clueless icons, but McCain's record doesn't put him anywhere near the worship-status he seems to be acquiring. The last eight years are simply going to be extended. Guess we've gotten so used to it now we don't even about it anymore.  (Friday | post #31)
